The New King of Electric Dirt Bikes

This is the new Storm Shock electric dirt bike hitting the market in early 2023. Visually it is very similar to the reigning king the Sur Ron X. The price is also similar to the sur ron at under $5,000.

The storm shock separates itself from the sur ron via the power system. The sur ron has a peak power of 6,000 watts, the storm shock delivers 8,000 watts. A very common upgrade for the sur ron is a larger 72 volt battery to both increase that max power and extend range. These upgrades cost no less than an additional $2,500.

Here’s where the storm shock offers serious value. This bike by default has a 72 volt battery with a massive capacity of 38ah. There is no need to spend thousands of dollars in upgrades.

Mechanically the bike functions very similar to that of a sur ron. We can see from the pictures that the battery, controller, and motor placement are almost the same and it shares the ability to quickly remove the battery. The front suspension fork also appears to be the exact same with either a KKE or DNM branded fork.

The only major difference I can see is the rear suspension. The storm shock has a direct connection between the shock and the swing arm. This is great for low maintenance but most of the best suspension systems today use a more complicated rear linkage to increase effectiveness.

To conclude, the new storm shock adds spice to the electric dirt bike space and has legit advantages over the sur ron. To get a full sense of this new competitor we will need to wait till next year and its official release, but as a PEV enthusiast, I am excited to see how this bike will effect the market.
